Guide: Corporate Accountability for Human Rights Violations in the MENA Region TIMEP December 13, 2022 Download report As part of a commitment to expand the accountability toolbox available to advocates from and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) is proud to announce the release of a new, practical guide on corporate accountability for human rights violations in the region. The guide, which is authored by lawyers Noor Hamadeh, Mai El-Sadany, and Yasmin Omar, is tailored to lawyers and the civil society organizations that support and work with them. Available in Arabic and English, it has been crafted to introduce users to corporate accountability mechanisms, with a focus on the international mechanisms that are most relevant and applicable to the MENA region. It is not, nor does it seek to be a comprehensive treatise; rather, it is meant to serve as an introduction—to present a menu of options of sorts—to welcome lawyers from and in the MENA region to the world of corporate accountability and to highlight some of the key mechanisms that may be available to them. The guide takes into account the forms of corporate abuses present in the region, the types of business actors from and in the region, and the larger political, economic, and rule of law trends and conditions affecting the region. TIMEP and the authors of the guide hope that the publication of this resource will spark a larger conversation on the state of accountability in the MENA region. This includes the creative means by which to hold perpetrators and states to account and the responsibility that business actors have to do better in and for the region.
