Tarhuna in the jaws of war machine: Displacements, forced disappearances and extra judicial killings

It called all parties to respect international humanitarian law and human rights principles, and stated in a released statement that it had received hundreds of reports that included enforced disappearances, murders, torture, and forced displacement of entire families since April 2020 in Tarhuna city and that all these crimes were committed by the 9th Army Brigade “Al-Kaniyat” (Kani-Brothers). The UNSMIL stated that they have confirmed that the aforementioned brigade carried out several summary executions at Tarhuna on 13 June 2020. DAAM Center condemns all form of violations and crimes that are being committed by all parties to the conflict in Tarhuna city as forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and displacement. DAAM Center recalls that these crimes constitute war crimes which are not subject to statutes of limitation, and that make their perpetrators legally pursuable domestically and internationally. At the same time, DAAM Center calls upon the ministries of interiors and their affiliated security bodies of both parties to assume their responsibility in protecting citizens from such violations.
